Amazing read!! Lucinda Berry does it again. This psychological thriller follows 3 families, and told from the POV of each family matriarch, as they deal with the death of one of the children. It follows the investigation to determine whether it was accidental, suicide, or murder. The investigation is hindered by the fact that one child is in a coma and the other won't speak. Along the way, we learn that these 3 seemingly perfect families are far from it.Ms Berry has a real knack for getting into your mind and making you want more and more of her stories. This novel is no exception! It will have you on the edge the entire read as her characters are very well fleshed out and you care about all three ladies, though some more than others.Thoroughly enjoyed this read and highly recommend it! Lucinda Berry’s experience as not just a clinical psychologist but (I have to believe) a *really good one* shines in every page and chapter of this book. She made a bold choice in rotating among three friends who were all married with sons, as that setup inevitably makes it tough for the reader to keep track of who’s who, but believe me, it is worth the extra effort, and by the end of the book, I couldn’t imagine mixing them up. This is the most authentic and nuanced portrayal of long-term friendships among 3 people that I’ve ever read, with the subtle power shifts and alliances and the assumptions each makes about the others ... AND it is the most authentic and realistic portrayal of the impact of such a terrible trauma on each of the friends and on each character’s marriage and family. No one in the book is an angel, there’s no easy perfection, but the flaws are real, the kind of lies and evasions real people tell themselves and let themselves get away with. And still by the end, I loved all three friends. The book was amazing, and to my considerable astonishment, the ending knocked it out of the park - about which I will say no more! Seriously.
